Florida Panthers forward Brad Marchand is a UFA at the end of the season, and with the Detroit Red Wings' $21 million in cap space, Steve Yzerman could sign him and upgrade the top-six.
The Detroit Red Wings need help. It's a mantra at this point, due to the mediocrity of the lineup Yzerman has built lately.
There's never enough goal support, and the defense has been less than stable, thanks. However, Steve Yzerman can find some stability in the summer, after the Stanley Cup Finals have been concluded and a new champion has been crowned.
NHL Insider Kevin Allan has linked the Panthers forward, and pending UFA, to the Detroit Red Wings.
Marchand has been on a tear during the Stanley Cup Finals, scoring twice in the Panthers' 5-4 OT win, including one short-handed goal.
Marchand remains one of the best forwards in the game, and when his contract expires will have all eyes on his next destination. Which is why GM Steve Yzerman should sell him on playing in Detroit.
The Panthers have 9 free agents to take care of, including
Sam Bennett and
Aaron Ekblad, should they decide to keep them around. Marchand could be a cap casualty, and could add some snarl to the Red Wings lineup, which is missing, with all the skill in the top-six.
Marchand's the kind of player everyone wants on their team, an agitator who could score upwards of 50+ points or more a season.
His $6.125 million contract expires, and he'll be a UFA at the end of the year; no better time for Yzerman to pounce when July 1st rolls around.
