Detroit Red Wings reporter calls out the Dallas Stars with proposed blockbuster

The decision by Dallas Stars coach Peter DeBoer to yank goalie Jake Oettinger from the crease in last night's Game 5 loss to the Edmonton Oilers has been met with considerable controversy and scrutiny.

DeBoer also had less than flattering remarks to say about Oettinger after the game, implying that his sample size against the Oilers has been poor and that he felt he had no choice but to try and spark his team with a goaltending change, a move that backfired with the Oilers' 6-3 win to knock Dallas from the playoffs for the 2nd year in a row.

Multiple hypotheticals have been thrown out that see one of DeBoer or Oettinger leave town after last night's uncomfortable climax - could the Red Wings come calling?

Ryan Hana of the Winged Wheel Podcast stated on X that Detroit should gladly welcome the chance to trade for Oettinger if the Stars were to make him available.

Moving Oettinger would be a considerable challenge for the Stars, as he has an AAV (average annual value) of $8.25 million for the next several years. In a hypothetical deal, the Red Wings would need the Stars to retain a portion of that.

Additionally, the development of Sebastian Cossa, widely believed to be Detroit's goalie of the future, has been concerningly slow - especially after he was recently benched for struggling during the AHL playoffs for the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Aging veterans Cam Talbot and Petr Mrazek are both under contract through next year, but neither is a long-term solution in Detroit.
