The Edmonton Oilers and GM Stan Bowman have been linked to Detroit Red Wings prospect Sebastian Cossa, who has had a stellar season in the AHL with the Griffins.

The Edmonton Oilers and GM Stan Bowman have looked to upgrade the team's goalie depth.
For the Oilers, Bowman looks to add for now, but will consider a player who could be helpful in the future, too. For Bowman, he'll have to scour the NHL for free agents, RFAs, and prospects.
Fortunately for him, the Detroit Red Wings have two prospects that stick out like a sore thumb. One of them is Trey Augustine, who played for the Michigan State Spartans last season, and instead of turning pro has opted to head back to the NCAA for another season.

Oilers complete trade call with Steve Yzerman, get shutdown

According to NHL Insider Cam Robinson, Augustine is a no-go, as the Oilers completed a phone call to Steve Yzerman but were immediately turned down.
Cam Robinson said, "They (Oilers) are looking a little more long term. I was told they've contacted Detroit. I believe the first person they asked about was Trey Augustine...that was a non-starter. They have Sebastian Cossa sitting right there.

That leaves slim pickings for Bowman, who is in need of a franchise goalie who could be a factor during their next playoff run. That could be NHL-ready goalie Sebastian Cossa.

Sebastian Cossa: Trade Bait or Future Starter?

Cossa was a former 15th overall pick in 2021 and has been successful in the AHL with the Grand Rapids Griffins, posting a 21-15-5 record, with a 2.45 GAA, and a .911 save percentage.
He'd get one game of experience in the NHL, posting an .857 save percentage. It may be premature to let him play 30 games in the NHL next year, but the Oilers could limit him to around 15-20 games to slowly develop him as a backup.
Since he is turning 23, it'd be too soon to expect him to be the White Knight that Oilers fans need to save the franchise from woe. Instead, he could be a future superstar in the net, and could possibly save them from a rotation of Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard in the future.
While Augustine would be an ideal choice for the Oilers, the Red Wings have him pegged as their future starting goalie. The team could move Cossa for assets, despite Augustine not making the jump to the AHL just yet.
Last season, he finished with a .924 save percentage, and it appears the team has full faith in him, even without a contract.
It'd be risky business to send away a 1st-rounder while your future sits in the NCAA if Cossa is moved, Augustine needs to be signed sooner rather than later.
