Former Red Wings goaltender reveals the true reasoning behind leaving the organization
Czech-born goaltender Jan Bednar shared in an interview why he left the Detroit Red Wings organization, which had demoted him to the ECHL's Toledo Walleye.
Former Red Wings goaltender prospect gave the team a good effort in the ECHL with the Toledo Walleye. He played 37 games with the Grand Rapids Griffins, producing a .919 save percentage, and would stay consistent in the ECHL with a .914 save percentage.
The demotion was unexplained, but we have an idea: trades and arrivals.
As the team added
Michal Postava, he got top-billing over Bednar, and his path to the AHL and NHL was blocked by all of the depth the team had acquired this past offseason.
«Unfortunately not,» Bednar told Czech website hokej.cz. «The offer to move up didn't come, and I wanted to take a step forward in my career.»
«I needed a change, a new impulse,» Bednar said. «I had been stagnant (in North America) for the last two years.
«My agent and I decided that returning to Europe was the best option for me at the moment.»
Jan Bednar's move has paid off for the former Detroit Red Wings prospect
With the Asat Pori this season, he has a record of 10-3-1, with a 1.81 GAA, and a .933 save percentage.
Now he hopes to grow his goaltending game in Finland. The teams in Finland didn't seem like they'd be on his radar, but they had been contacting him on a regular basis to offer him an opportunity.
The
Czech-born goalie will have to work his way back into the scope of NHL scouts again.
