Former Red Wings legend Henrik Zetterberg makes return to hockey scene outside of Detroit
A former Detroit Red Wings legend Henrik Zetterberg has made a return to the hockey scene outside of Detroit.
Seven years after hanging up the skates, the former Red Wings captain is stepping back into the game in a different job: the 2008 Stanley Cup champion and Conn Smythe Trophy winner has officially agreed to a new role with Timrå IK in the Swedish Hockey League.
It's a significant move for the longtime Red Wings captain, who retired in 2018 after back problems cut his NHL career short.
New Hockey Job For Henrik Zetterberg
Timrå IK announced in an official press release that Zetterberg will serve as Sporting Advisor for their senior and junior programs.
It's a role that fits his background perfectly, as he brings decades of experience at the highest level and a deep understanding of what it takes to succeed.
Zetterberg himself expressed his excitement about formally joining the club:
"I am passionate about Timrå IK and would like to contribute in a more structured way. This is an association with proud traditions but also with a strong belief in the future."
The former Red Wing also made it clear that his focus is on the next generation of players:
"I want to help create the conditions for even more young, ambitious players to be able to take the step here and contribute to the club's continued growth."
The team GM, Kent Norberg, who has been friends with Zetterberg for years, says being able to count on the former NHLer is a major boost for the organization's long-term plans:
"This is an important step in our long-term investment. Zäta and Emil have already been involved in various ways last season and before that. Now forming an official sporting council is absolutely right on time."
