Detroit Red Wings legend, Gordie Howe's last goal of his 26-year career in the NHL, scored with the Hartford Whalers, has been significantly altered with John Garrett being listed as an assist on the goal.
Gordie Howe had a successful 26-year career in the NHL, with a minor stop in the WHA (Houston Aeros, 2 years), much to the dismay of NHL owners everywhere.
The Hartford Whalers were a part of the merger, which Howe was a part of, that changed the NHL forever.
Mr. Hockey would play as a Whaler during the end of his career, which spanned more than two decades, and would play his final season in 1979-80 with the NHL's "Hartford" Whalers.
In the WHA, they were known as the New England Whalers, but that's besides the point, as Gordie
Howe's last goal has undergone significant record changes.
The original assist was credited to Mark Howe, Gordie's son, rather than Whaler's goalie John Garrett, who deserved the credit for the assist, he is now receiving 45 years later.
Instead of being credited in the play originally, as Garrett started the sequence cycling the puck to Mark Howe, he'd be left out of the play entirely.
Mark Howe then carries the puck into the Canadiens zone. Flipping a pass across to his dad, Gordie unleashes a lethal backhand shot through traffic and beats Montreal goalie Denis Herron.
Garrett would lobby for himself for years, only to fall on deaf ears, until it had been confirmed on June 6th, he'd receive recognition for it.
HNIC's own Ron MacLean would confirm that the NHL is changing the history books during game 2 of the Stanley Cup finals between the Panthers and Oilers, and it's another win for NHL goalies everywhere, who have been snubbed for their importance on the ice.
««John Garrett was denied official status for this assist. He moves the puck. In the record books, it just has Howe from Mark. It did not feature (Garrett's) assist. It will, forevermore.»
Not only does Garrett add an assist to his career totals, but recognition on an iconic goal, Mr. Hockey's last goal in the NHL ever.
