Multi-million dollar extension underway that's set to make Detroit Red Wings history
A multi-million dollar extension could potentially make the Detroit Red Wings franchise history over the coming weeks.
He's been eligible to sign a contract extension since July 1st, and all signs point to a very expensive deal.
Back in May, the Red Wings made it clear just how much they value Edvinsson. The Swede posted seven goals and 31 points in 78 games and quickly earned the trust of the coaching staff in key situations.
Projecting Simon Edvinsson's Contract
There's no rush from Edvinsson's side. He's got one more year on his entry-level deal and a full season ahead to build his value.
But Detroit might not want to wait. The current CBA allows for eight-year re-signings. Come 2026, that window drops to seven.
That's why locking him up now could be crucial, not just for the extra year of term, but for long-term cap planning.
Contract projections suggest Edvinsson could land something in the range of eight years at around $8.1 million per year. That would put him just under
Moritz Seider's recent $8.55 million extension, a line Detroit might not want him to cross.
Comparable deals help shape the conversation.
K'Andre Miller signed for eight years at $8.5 million.
Owen Power inked an eight-year deal at $8.35 million.
Edvinsson's camp will undoubtedly point to those numbers. And if he takes another step forward this season, that price tag could go even higher.
At the end of the day, Edvinsson wants to be here. The Red Wings want him here. The only question now is how much-and for how long.
Updates and details will follow.
