The Detroit Red Wings acquired forward Eddie Genborg 40th overall in the 2025 NHL entry draft in Los Angeles and their once-thoughts of selecting a gritty forward whose projection was a bottom-six forward, has simply faded away for the better.

Genborg, 18, is following a similar route to Red Wings forward Marco Kasper, who proved critics wrong and blew away pre-draft expectations with his on-ice play.
From an early standpoint, Genborg is already upsetting the current expectations that the Red Wings had when selecting him at the entry draft.
"Eddie Genborg(2nd Round'25)
2 Goals +2 3 SOG 1 Hit 15:10 TOI in a 5-0 win

Another great performance. Fearless player. Took one in a bad spot and just kept getting to the net. Good to see some progress in the transition offense. Could have had a couple more."
Genborg buried two goals on Saturday in Timra's 5-0 win against HV71, opening the scoring with the first goal and closing it out with the last with just six minutes remaining in the third period.
This is quickly shaping into yet another successful acquisition by general manager Steve Yzerman.
His two-goal performance brings his goal-total to seven on the season, and amongst players in his age group, he ranks second in the SHL only behind the Chicago Blackhawks' 3rd overall selection, Anton Frondell.

Red Wings prospects guidance coming from franchise legend Henrik Zetterberg

Genborg has the perfect mentor with his current club, Timra of the SHL, as Henrik Zetterberg has been working as a skills coach and helping the young Red Wings future star with on-ice play at practice.
For comparison, Genborg is currently on pace for a 38-point season as an 18-year-old.
Lucas Raymond, current Red Wings star, only tallied 18 points at that age in the SHL.
His current play in the SHL isn't the old bright sign for the Red Wings organization, as Team Sweden selected him for their upcoming IIHF World Junior Championship roster, which will take place in December in Minnesota.
«We're just aiming for (world junior) gold, hopefully,» Genborg told Swedish website TTela. «Of course, I hope to play it. It's a big tournament. Something I've dreamed of for quite a while, to play in the (world juniors).»

In August, Genborg donned the Swedish jersey in the World Junior Summer Showcase.
The future is bright in Detroit, and this young 18-year-old is just a small sample size of that statement.
