Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman referenced the surprising contract that Brad Marchand was given by the divisional foe Florida Panthers to stay with the team.
While the Red Wings didn't sign any of the higher profile UFAs that were available, one of them surprised fans everywhere by signing a 6-year contract.
Brad Marchand, who helped the divisional foe Florida Panthers win the Stanley Cup for the 2nd year in a row, agreed to a 6-year contract despite being previously thought to head to free agency.
Red Wings GM Steve Yzerman, who said Detroit didn't have the chance to talk to several UFA players before they re-signed with their teams, called out Marchand's contract in an interesting way and joked that it meant captain Dylan Larkin would be around for over twice as long.
Brad Marchand at 37 just signed a 6 year contract, so I got Dylan (Larkin) for another 15 years I figure.
Panthers forward Sam Bennett, who was also a pending UFA before re-signing with Florida, talked about how much the addition of Marchand meant to the team.
As soon as he got traded here, he chirped me in the group chat instantly for our history in the last playoffs. But what he's meant to this team, I truly don't think we win a Stanley Cup without him.
His leadership, his will to win, it's inspiring and I was telling him before every game, 'We're going to follow you,' and we did. He was a dog every night and he for sure could've won this trophy. He's a better player and person than I ever knew and I'm grateful I got to play with him.
