On this day in Detroit Red Wings history, the team acquired Alberta-native Stan Weir from the Edmonton Oilers.

Today in Hockeytown history, the Red Wings acquired Center Stan Weir from the Edmonton Oilers.
The two teams combined in a trade for Stan Weir, a center who began his career in the NHL with the California Golden Seals. Weir was drafted 28th overall in 1972.
Weir's career lasted 642 games in the NHL. He's suited up for the California Golden Seals, Toronto Maple Leafs, Edmonton Oilers, Colorado Rockies, and Detroit Red Wings, joined the WHA (Edmonton Oilers 1978-79).
He'd spend the last two years of his professional hockey career in the CHL with the Montana Magic, the Milwaukee Admirals of the IHL.

The Detroit Red Wings Acquire Stan Weir for Cash

Weir's path to the Red Wings was quite an interesting one.
Before he was an Edmonton Oiler, he was a Toronto Maple Leaf from 1975 to 1977. The center would make a stop in the minors along the way and return for the 1977-78 season.
Instead of risking being sent back down to the CHL once again, he jumped to the WHA and would play in the rebel hockey league with the Edmonton Oilers.
Playing on the same line as Wayne Gretzky, he scored 31-30-61 points that season, before the NHL-WHA merger occurred.
Eventually, the Maple Leafs would claim Weir on waivers, once Edmonton joined the NHL.
The Oilers would rejoin the team after the Maple Leafs put him on waivers, and he'd stick around for two more years in Edmonton.
His 1979-80 season with the Oilers was his most productive, scoring 33-33-66 points. He was traded after two seasons to the Colorado Rockies for Ed Cooper, a trade the NHL would void after 10 games due to Cooper being injured.
Weir would rejoin his former team, and they would maintain the same intent to trade him. On September 14th, 1982, the Detroit Red Wings acquired Stan Weir for cash.
He'd only play 57 games in Hockeytown and scored 5-24-29 points. Soon after, he'd make a transition to the minor leagues.
