Former NHL player delivers a bold accusation against Red Wings forward Lucas Raymond
After four games, Team Sweden sits at the top its group, notably ahead of Canada and Finland, who have each played only three games so far.
However, in a recent development, Raymond is facing accusations over his conduct in his last game.
He was called out by a former NHLer for embellishment.
Raymond Accused of Embellishment at the World Championship
During the game between Finland and Sweden, Raymond was struck in the face by a high stick and began to bleed.
He then wiped the blood with a towel and showed it to the referees, who awarded a major penalty to the Finnish team-a call widely considered correct.
Live on Finnish television, former NHLer
Sami Kapanen called Raymond's gesture a «scandalous trick»:
"I have to say that Raymond worked hard to get that expulsion. He puts the towel in his mouth, under his lip, and gets the blood out of there.
This time there was enough blood on the towel to get 2+2 minutes."
Raymond later responded, insisting there was no deception involved:
"I don't know what to say. If it bleeds, it bleeds. I can't control what it looks like in my mouth after I get hit. It feels pretty irrelevant, actually."
This isn't the first time Raymond has faced such accusations. During the past NHL season,
Boston Bruins defenseman
Nikita Zadorov criticized him for allegedly selling a slash to the referees:
"It's a man's league. We all get slashed. We're all in pain. But you don't [shake your hand] and show the referee that you got slashed. So I think it's just a little bit disrespectful, so I went after him.
You don't sell penalties."
Raymond is likely to be watched closely if similar incidents occur again.
