A Detroit Red Wings forward announced a life-changing event ahead of tonight's game against the New York Rangers.
The players were away from home for a week, and a member of the team had something special waiting for him.
Indeed, last night, the Detroit Red Wings confirmed that the wife of the forward
Mason Appleton gave birth to their child.
The organization announced the news in a post on X:
Mason Appleton Emerged As Fan Favourite During Patrick Kane's Injury
Patrick Kane, clearly among the most appreciated players on the team by its fans, was forced to miss the last nine games due to an injury.
In the past weeks, Mason Appleton replaced him on the second line.
Although he couldn't bring the same offensive impact that Kane has, he still played well.
Recently, the Wings head coach Todd McLellan had great words to say about the former Winnipeg Jets veteran who signed a two-year deal in Detroit during the 2025 offseason:
"He gets the game. He knows when he should be pulling out and when he should be diving in. His game management skills are pretty good, and that's why we felt comfortable putting him up there."
"Guys are really happy for him. He's fit into our group really well."
Appleton, 29, tallied six points, including three goals, in 14 games with the Red Wings so far.
When Kane returns to the lineup, either tonight against the Rangers, Sunday against the Blackhawks, or at a later date, he will get his spot on the second line back, and Appleton will return to the third or the fourth line.
No confirmation about Appleton's presence in tonight's game was released. Stay tuned for further updates from the organization regarding his status.
