The Detroit Red Wings could pull off a very unique way of acquiring Mason McTavish from the Anaheim Ducks that wouldn't require a trade or giving up a current roster player.

Mason McTavish trade speculation continues to progress this summer, with the 22-year-old remaining without a contract with just under 40 days away from NHL training camp kicking off.
An executive source believes the Detroit Red Wings are frontrunners to acquire the former 3rd overall pick, with the main reasoning surrounding Steve Yzerman's relationship with Anaheim Ducks general manager Pat Verbeek, which was exemplified by a huge trade to kick off this summer involving goaltender John Gibson.
"One team I keep hearing that has continued to show strong interest is the Detroit Red Wings," the source explained to RG.org. "Obviously there's a history there with Pat [Verbeek] and Steve [Yzerman], and I really think Steve sees McTavish as a player that would clearly change the whole dynamic of his team up the middle there."

But a source believes the Red Wings could acquire McTavish through a unique way that wouldn't revolve around losing a current roster player.

Detroit Red Wings to acquire Mason McTavish through an offer sheet?

The Athletic's Shayna Goldman and B/R's Frank Seravalli revealed that McTavish could receive an offer sheet that would grant him a change of scenery after several years of losing with the Anaheim Ducks.
"Nevertheless, The Athletic's Shayna Goldman and B/R's Frank Seravalli have suggested McTavish could receive an offer sheet. The latter thinks he might welcome a change of scenery after several seasons of losing with the rebuilding Ducks."

An offer sheet would entail an average salary between $7 and $9.3M, and compensation of a first, second, and third-round draft pick.
It would all come down to the Anaheim Ducks and if they would match the offer sheet given by the Red Wings for McTavish.
