As the rumor mill about a trade of former Stanley Cup champion Ryan O'Reilly ramps up, NHL Insider Pierre LeBrun gives us an idea of what the Red Wings would pay for Ryan O'Reilly.
The Detroit Red Wings have an idea of what they will have to pay for former Stanley Cup champion Ryan O'Reilly of the Nashville Predators.
He's emerged as the Predators' latest trade candidate as the team's performed miserably.
The former 2nd-round pick of the Colorado Avalanche has been playing for the Predators since 2023-24 after a disappointing stint in Toronto.
Since then, he's been a reliable producer for the Predators, scoring 69 points and 53 points in the last two years.
According to TSN's Pierre LeBrun, it will cost the Red Wings in trade an A-level prospect (think Axel Sandin Pellikka) and a 1st-round draft pick.
The trade proposal is expensive, but if it works out, it could be what the Red Wings need.
Should the Detroit Red Wings Give Up a Prospect and a First-Round Pick for Ryan O'Reilly?
It is a costly proposal given that Ryan O'Reilly is past his prime in the NHL.
Despite the fact that he has won a Stanley Cup before, it should give Steve Yzerman pause if a run to the cup could end up costing a vital piece of the team's future.
Though in actuality, his contract is driving his value ($4.5 million average annual value), plus his 50+ point production makes him a commodity in this trade market.
The Red Wings could ostensibly afford the cost of the Predators' ask if this is the case, but the question remains, what will Barry Trotz ask of Steve Yzerman should a deal come together?
He'll need to consider whether or not it's worth extending O'Reilly beyond his contract expiration, which expires at the end of the 2026-27 season.
