Steve Yzerman snaps at Red Wings reporter for bringing up past trade of Jake Walman
During GM Steve Yzerman's season-ending press conference, Jake Walman (now an Edmonton Oiler ), whose name brought up a defensive response in regards to his trade to the San Jose Sharks.
GM Steve Yzerman made the unpopular move to trade defenseman
Jake Walman to the San Jose Sharks in June 2024.
Walman would be shipped to San Jose with a 2024 2nd-round pick (53rd OA) attached to him in order to sweeten the deal.
In all ironies of ironies, Walman is now competing in the Stanley Cup playoffs with the
Edmonton Oilers, while the Red Wings are finished for the season.
An unpopular trade that hangs over the GM's head was brought up again during the press conference.
After being asked about Walman, he wouldn't answer any questions regarding the move and would be seen as defensive in his response.
What exactly did Walman do in Detroit that has him living in infamy in Yzerman's head?
The Edmonton Oilers paid a 1st-round pick and a prospect to the San Jose Sharks for Walman. Yzerman completely undervalued him and the Oilers as a top-four defenseman.
Yzerman doesn't regret trading Walman. We continue to ponder what Walman did to the Red Wings front office. Did he kick someone's dog? Spit in someone's drink?
Or is it simply a matter of Yzerman's hubris that he refuses to be transparent with reporters, given the mess surrounding it all?
Walman now plays for the Edmonton Oilers and has scored 40 points (7 goals, 33 assists) in 65 games split between the Sharks and Oilers this year.
Seems like a bad deal to me.
