Heartbreaking story developing involving fallen Detroit Red Wing and NHL legend
A heartbreaking story is developing involving a fallen Detroit Red Wing and NHL legend, Borje Salming.
He made history by becoming one of the first Europeans to establish himself in North America. He may have never won a Stanley Cup, but was listed among the 100 best NHL players of all time and is in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
He established himself as a fearless and respected defenseman during his time with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He also played the final 49 games of his 1,148-game career with the Detroit Red Wings.
But while Salming's memory remains alive in the minds of fans, a heartbreaking story is currently developing in his childhood town.
Borje Salming's Childhood Home And Arena To Be Destroyed
A mining expansion project in his
hometown of Kiruna endangers two important places of his life: his childhood home and the rink where he first learned to skate.
His brother Stig recently confirmed the news in the Swedish media, explaining the situation with great sadness.
"It's sad. When we were up there filming the Börje movie, we walked along the streets where we grew up and to the ice rink. It feels sad that it won't be there anymore, but I understand the reasons."
For many, it is surprising that no initiative has been taken to preserve these places.
That project is forcing the whole village to relocate. You read well, in a 30-year project, over 3,000 homes will be relocated. A few weeks ago, a massive step was made, when the village's 113-year-old church was moved:
The city mayor Mats Taaveniku stated:
The church is a statement or a symbol for this city transformation. We are right now halfway there. We have 10 years left to move the rest of the city."
