A sought-after NHL veteran still available in free agency is rumored to have narrowed his choice down to two specific teams, including the Detroit Red Wings.

The Detroit Red Wings Executive Vice President and General Manager Steve Yzerman already added some depth players to his forward group in the offseason, but there's another player who's rumored to be interested in joining the Wings next season: Max Pacioretty.
The former Montreal Canadiens captain is coming off a 13-point season with the Leafs, after he signed a professional tryout in Toronto just before training camp. Now, at 36 years old, it appears Pacioretty's only way back in the NHL will be with another PTO.
The Leafs made several acquisitions over the offseason, and it would be surprising to see him back with the team next year.

Pacioretty Linked To Detroit Red Wings And Edmonton Oilers

A recent report on Pacioretty also revealed that his entire family family is in Michigan, and that he prefers to settle down.
"As far as next season goes, so far there's been no hints at retirement, and from all accounts, Pacioretty will sign a professional tryout agreement with either the Detroit Red Wings, which is nice and close to home and his family, or he'll head out west and sign with the Edmonton Oilers, and once again chase the Cup.

The Maple Leafs have a slew of new forwards, so it doesn't feel like there's a match there anymore."

He was limited to 37 games last season, often scratched from the lineup in Toronto and suffering injuries.
The veteran would bring a wealth of experience to Detroit if he has the chance. Yzerman could consider bringing him on board with a PTO, then assess what he can bring to the lineup during camp, and offer him a deal near the league's minimum wage.
As for the Oilers, their situation looks a bit like Toronto, as they made several changes in the forward group and already have a lot of depth.
But Pacioretty knows that joining the Oilers could be his best shot at winning a Stanley Cup.
