Imminent trade underway involving Detroit Red Wings' $27M defensive trade target
GM Craig Conroy and the Calgary Flames are poised to trade defenseman Rasmus Andersson, as Mikael Backlund has confirmed that he's gone, and we wonder if he will be headed south to Detroit?
If so, that would be helpful for the Red Wings' blueline, which has been leaky this past season, along with below-average goaltending.
While adding
John Gibson during the offseason could be considered a big win for Steve Yzerman, he's left another gap in the lineup open, and one of them is on the blueline.
Is it a
Rasmus Andersson-sized gap? That is the question. Andersson makes $4.55 million AAV and is in the final year of his $27 million contract. In a recent interview, Mikael Backlund confirmed he's a goner.
"Yes, he's going to get traded, that's obvious. [...]
It's a shame we're getting to this. "
- Mikael Backlund
Andersson played 81 games in Calgary last season and contributed 31 points (11-20) to the Flames. He'd be a part of the team's failed push to the playoff spot.
Whatever team is lucky enough to snag the affordable, two-way defenseman, they'll have a reliable veteran on their hands.
The defenseman's best season came in 2021-22, where he scored 50 points (4-46) and was part of Darryl Sutter's fated push to the postseason.
Losing him would be beneficial in the long run as the assets which could they could get for him would pay off down the road.
But they'd lose a vital piece in the lineup.
With Mikael Backlund's acknowledgement of the situation, the Flames are poised to trade him.
We just hope he lands in Detroit, the Red Wings are a team he has been linked to in recent trade rumors.
